Hoisin Chicken Stir Fry With Rice

Hoisin Chicken Stir Fry

If you like Asian cuisine, Hoisin chicken stir fry will definitely become part of your cooking. If you are not a fan of Asian food, this recipe can be a good starting gate into the Chinese culinary world.

Many people do not prepare Asian dishes often due to the absence of various exotic ingredients. However, all you have to do is look for a local Asian store. Here you should find all the necessary ingredients for the various recipes.

It’s the hoisin sauce, which makes this dish so unique and flavourful. You can also get this condiment in Asian stores, but for an even better and more intense taste, you can prepare your own homemade Hoisin sauce.

How to prepare hoisin chicken stir fry

Marinate the sliced chicken with half a hoisin sauce and a little bit of cornstarch and leave to marinate for about 20 minutes. If you don’t have time and want a quick dinner, you can stir fry the meat right away.

Important in almost every stir fry is frying each vegetable separately. Therefore, it is especially good to fry broccoli (it is good to blanch it in boiling water for a few minutes to make it softer) and red bell pepper as well. Aromatic ingredients like ginger, garlic, chilies, or shallots can be put into a wok altogether.

The key is that you do not overfill your wok and that all the ingredients have enough space. As a result, the wok maintains a high temperature and everything is fried evenly. If your wok is too dry, always add a bit of oil.

If you fry the chicken first, put it sideways on a plate to rest. Repeat this process with broccoli and peppers. Once you add your aromatics, add the meat and vegetables back to the wok.

At this point, add the rest of the hoisin sauce and other liquid ingredients. Mix well and you can serve with a portion of nice rice and fresh spring onions.

Tips

  • you can use any kind of green vegetable. Sugar snap peas also work perfectly here
  • 4 tbsp of hoisin sauce may seem like a lot, but don’t forget that this is the main ingredient and this Chinese condiment makes the whole dish

Description

I had some leftover homemade Hosin sauce in the fridge and decided to make an easy and fast stir fry. It’s the sauce, which makes this Hoisin chicken stir fry so unique and flavourful.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 400g chicken thighs (sliced thinly)
  • 1 broccoli
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 4 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 shallot (or red onion)
  • 1 thumb-sized ginger (minced or thinly sliced)
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 red chili
  • 1 spring onion
  • 2 tsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp corn starch
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the chicken thighs thinly and marinate with 2 tbsp of Hoisin sauce and 1 tbsp of corn starch for about 20 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, start cooking the rice (or noodles) and prepare your vegetables.
  3. Heat oil in a wok on a high heat and add your chicken. When it starts to brown, add your chilli, minced ginger, and garlic. Fry for a minute and then set aside.
  4. Clean the wok fast, add chopped broccoli and fresh water. Cover for a couple of minutes to blanch it.
  5. Set broccoli aside, add a little bit of oil into a wok and add sliced onion and bell pepper, season with salt and pepper and fry until brown. Set aside.
  6. Stir fry blanched broccoli for a minute, add your browned meat and fried vegetables. Add rest of the hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil. Mix everything together.
  7. Turn off the heat and finish with sliced spring onion. Serve with some nice warm rice.

Notes

Noodles instead of rice are also a good choice.

I recommend chicken thighs, which are tastier and juicier than chicken breast.
