Hoisin sauce may not be a popular condiment in your kitchen. However, if you like to prepare recipes from Asian cuisine, this sauce is a must.
Hoisin sauce is an essential part of Chinese and Cantonese cuisine. You can find this sauce in various Asian, but also larger well-known supermarkets. However, I highly recommend making your own at home.
Homemade hoisin sauce brings a better and fresher taste. In addition, you know exactly what does it contain and you will avoid any preservatives that are present in the sauces from the store.
How to make it
Preparing hoisin sauce is very simple. Just mix all the necessary ingredients and keep the sauce in a jar. Most ingredients should be commonly available. For black bean sauce, you probably need to go to an Asian store. If you don’t know what black bean sauce is, it’s basically fermented black soybeans. Due to possible unavailability, this ingredient may be replaced by miso paste.
In addition to brown sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar and sesame oil, the presence of a Chinese five spices is important. Chinese five spices, which I also prepared myself, is a fantastic condiment in Chinese recipes. It gives Hoisin sauce an excellent aromatic flavor.
If you have all the necessary ingredients ready, mix them well in a bowl or blender. If it seems too thick, you can add some water. Pour into a container and store in the refrigerator.
Usage of hoisin sauce
This Chinese condiment is very versatile. For instance, it will give your Pho soup a great flavor. You can glaze the meat with Hoisin sauce before roasting, which will give it a sweet and sour taste and a beautiful golden-brown color.
Finally, you can use it in various stir fries, such as this recipe for hoisin chicken stir fry with rice. But it’s entirely up to you in which recipes you use this excellent sauce.
